T4 Update

Keeping hydrated.
When mum and dad took me to the vet on Monday for my T4 blood test they had to take a poop and a pee sample too. The good news is the poop isn't black and tarry like it was but is very dark brown so is improving. I am doing semi formed poops now as well.
My pee sample was mostly good as well and the amazing thing is that there is no blood in it. That is the first time it has been clear since the first time I went to the vet to find out why I was losing weight about 6 months ago. Two lots of antibiotics hadn't got rid of it and the peeps had said no more antibiotics, we would just take a chance on what was causing it as I was feeling so ill after them. We don't know why it suddenly disappeared but we are very glad it did.
The bad part of the pee sample is that the PH is very high. I drink a lot and always have done, and I pee well too without any problems. Mum will keep a close eye on me to make sure that I keep peeing well.
My vet rang today with my T4 result which we had been hoping would be borderline so I could stay off thyroid pills. It was high!
When I first went on the pills my level was 55 and with the pills it got down to 22 which is right in the middle of where it should be. Now it has gone up to 110. I will stay off pills for just under another 2 weeks to give me a bit longer to recover from the bad effects I suffered from the Carbimazole. When I have had a month rest from them I will go on a low dose of Felimazole which I will have twice a day. Mum and dad will be watching me like a hawk and the first sign of any bad reactions and they will be stopped immediately.
When the vet saw me on Monday he said that apart from being so thin, I looked much better in myself. He said that 2 weeks before I had looked like an old cat who had given up on life and just laid on the examination table with no interest in anything.
I don't give up without a fight. Those mousies will be waiting in the fields for me so I have to keep getting better to sort them out.

  3. Purring for him to tolerate the felimazole. Getting that T4 down will help with the weight. Audrey put on lots of weight once her T4 was down. We actually gave Audrey human methimazole.
Also, once Audrey's thyroid normalized, her poops became normal, whereas before they had been only semi formed.

  4. Flynn we are purring very hard for you to tolerate those meds.

  5. Everyone is praying for you Flynn. I am glad you had some good news. Is there any vet willing to get that special license to get the gel form of your medicine?

  6. Flynn, it's a pretty good update. We hope you'll tolerate the other hyper-t med better. We're not sure if methimazole is the same as your old med or is the same as your new one or a different one altogether (the med Annie was on). Anyway, lots of purrs and good luck. We're glad you're looking and feeling better!

  7. Hope you feel better soon buddy. Angel Fin was on the new medicine and tolerated it well.

    Now, go get those mousies!

  10. Good new and bad news.... Glad you're looking better to the vet and wishing the T4 were much much lower. Hope resting from the meds a bit longer gets you more back to yourself but eventually you'll have to try them again. Hope you tolerate the felimazole better than the last bit. Paws, whiskers and eyes crossed!

  12. We're purring for you to get those numbers just right. The carbamazole/methimazole family of medications seems to be rough on cats who are allergic, so we're glad it's clearing your system and purring that the felimazole is going to be just right.

  14. Sweet Flynn, it's good that your vet factors in your emotional state as well as those pesky T4 numbers. Your willingness to cooperate with your family's and his efforts to help you heal is essential. Good lad! Keep experimenting with your menu and drink lots of fresh water!

  16. I think that all sounds pretty good, Flynn. I hope the T4 numbers will stabilize in the next weeks so you don't have to take any more of those icky pills.

  22. You are doing better. Derby looked like an old cat the day mum took him to get to the bridge. Hope you can avoid that for a while.

  23. Patches went through the same thing. I noticed a problem with her when she lost all the hair on her belly and lost so much weight. She couldn't tolerate the meds either and I wouldn't consider sending her for iodine treatment as she couldn't handle that.

    ReplyDelete
  24. We are thankful for the good news and hope the new med. will take care of theT4 and not be a problem for you.

For now, you keep thinking of those mousies who are needing your attention!

Sending you prayers today, Flynn and to your Mum and Dad, too.

    Holding you close,
    Lily

  36. I am glad you are feeling better, but I'm sad your thyroid level is so high now. Have you tried the Hill's Prescription y/d food? It is for thyroid disease. I thought maybe the food would help you with fewer side effects than the medication, but I don't know a whole lot about it.

I hope you can tolerate the new medication much better than the old one so you will feel even better soon!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Flynn, I hope you can tolerate the new medicines. Felimazole is what Smokey used to take, and he did fine with it. Does your country offer the radition therapy for the thyroid? One of the cats I sit for had it done last summer and is pill free, with normal values. She was even able to go off of her blood pressure medicine. Just a thought.

  38. Flynn, we really hope you can tolerate the new meds and are feeling better soon. We're continuing to purr for you.

  44. Flynn you do look so much better and I'm glad you're feeling better. We've been helping another friend of ours who was recently diagnosed with HyperT. One thing we've seriously seen over and over again now in doing research is that the medication (which is the US is methimazole or the carbimozole in the UK) is started too strongly. When that happens it can lead to serious repercussions. I'm sure your Mom has researched this and understands. It is a very frightening thing to get suddenly thrust into medical situations that are hard to understand but we are purring and praying for you all.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Wow, that's a high T4 number, Flynn! But the right combination of medicine, you'll reduce it. In the meantime, it's good that other aspects of your health are improving. If you need still more water, your people may try giving it to you by mouth with a syringe. I do that for my Tungsten; she dislikes it but puts up with it.

  46. Purring and praying for you, buddy! Glad you got some good news. Hope the next round of medicine does it's job!!! :)

  69. Hi Flynn it's Socks here the thyroid pills made me very sick so I can't take them. Mommy didn't want to send me off for RI treatment and they don't do surgery here anymore so we tried y/d food. It works by limiting your iodine intake. I didn't like the food at first but now I don't mind eating it and I feel great. When I went in for my yearly blood work all my values were where they were suppose to be including my thyroid.
