Memories-Caturday Art, The Ladder.

The photo used for Caturday Art was taken when the famous "Purrizen Fence" was being built.
Eric and Flynn used to have free run of the outdoors and would go off into the fields on their own and be back within a couple of hours.

In time, Eric started to go further and we would have to go looking for him. He would cross several fields towards one of the neighbouring farms. We started to worry for his safety, so both boys got grounded.

That meant that they could only go outdoors if I was with them. It upset them after having freedom to roam, and it upset us to see them fretting about it.
The solution was the purrizen fence. It was 8 feet high and the horizontal boards were on the outside so as not to make it to easy for them to escape over it.
As you can see, they wanted it done as soon as possible and helped out with it.

The fence meant the garden was completely enclosed so they were able to use their cat flap and go outdoors whenever they wanted to.
I am sure they could have got over the fence if they really wanted too, but they seemed more than happy with unlimited access to the garden. Of course I also took them for walks around the fields so they could continue their perimeter patrol and mouse hunting.

  4. That must have been worrying, with Eric going so far afield. No wonder the fence was built. And how smart of the boys to co-operate once it was built.

  5. We have a 6' high fence around the entire backyard. We CAN get over it, but TBT discourges us. So we dont very often.

He keeps telling us that our own backyard is safest. And that he COULD make it impossible.

  8. "Of course I also took them for walks around the fields"

We like the "of course" here, hehe. !!

Thank you for telling us about your fence. We've been actually wondering about how you solved the inside-out thing as we knew they had a combination of a catio and the wild.

Mom likes that it worked for you to walk with them without a leash. That's what she sometimes does with us, and it normally works

  9. Those boys were quite the adventurers and what a wonderful life you and Ivor gave them with so many opportunities to hunt together and roam the fields together. I know after the fence went up it was nice knowing they stayed in the garden unless they were with you all for a hike!

    Hugs, Teddy and Mom too

  12. The boys had a great life, didn't they! Their cat flap gave them a sense of freedom and the fence safety. Being able to go out whenever you want is a kitties dream. And we bet the fenced area acted like a wind break and a sun catcher too. Sweet!

  18. Yes, we can tell they were anxious for their prison walls to be erected. :) they were two fortunate boys to be so loved.

  19. Pipo would love it if petcretary let him go out on his own. He goes through the doggy door, but our fence while all around the property is chain link and easily climbed. And since our yard is large and we are living semi rurally we have to worry about predators...so he is an inside kitty. If he goes out, petcretary hurries to bring him back inside:) On the other paw, if we *take* him outside he protests. Go figure...MOL!

That is a nice and precious memory of your Eric and Flynn.

  31. It's hard not to worry when cats are out for an unlimited time because they tend to move away from home more and more ... and sometime, we don't sleep because they come bach at 3pm !!! Now, time's up at 7pm, everybody Inside ! You've found a completely satisfying compromise for them and.. you ! What a pleasure to see Eric and Flynn together ...

  32. As soon as I read about the fence, I thought to myself that no fence could keep your special boys contained if they didn't want to be ... but it turns out home was where their hearts were. It sounds like they adored you both as much as you adored them.

  33. That was a good idea, when they are going too far it's not good. Our cats have the neighbor gardens everybody knows them so there is no danger. Anyway the only one who is still checking the whole outside world is Arthur !
