Eric: I ate better yesterday and have eaten some today. It is probably the injection that the vet gave me that has helped my appetite and will last about 2 weeks. Mum spoke to the vet this morning so I will let her tell you what he said.
Mum Jackie: Eric's blood results came back and his kidneys and thyroid function are both good. The liver function results are not as good. The vet said it could be the gall bladder is not working properly and a liver biopsy would be the way to find out. Neither he, nor Ivor and myself really want to do that as it is an invasive procedure with general anaesthetic. Eric has reacted very badly to GA in the past. Although it is on his records to avoid the type used, it is better if he doesn't have to undergo a general if at all avoidable.
The vet has asked for us to bring Eric back at the end of the month to do another blood test to see if anything has changed. We also will be trying him on another wet food which has a higher protein content and is 100% natural. He is very fussy with his food. He likes Gourmet Perle and when he is well would eat us out of house and home! If we try to give him something different, no matter how good it is, he will turn his nose up at it, so let's just hope that he will decide he likes the new food.
Depending on the blood test at the end of the month, if the results haven't improved, he will have a liver scan which will only involve a light anaesthetic.
Thank you for all the purrs and kind words for Eric. Please keep our boy in your thoughts.

We are not regular visitors to your blog but have been following you from afar. We wanted to mention that there is a appetite enhancing drug called Periactin, which we sourced here in France for Ginger Jasper, which can work magic in making cats eat. If you would like us to send you some, we would be happy to do so, as it is not available anymore in the UK.
ReplyDeleteThe Poupounette Gang in France
Still a mystery for now, but things will become clearer before long. We send healing vibes and purrayers for Eric.
ReplyDeleteThere are two good pieces of news there, that his kidneys and thyroid results are OK. Purring for a good appetite and liver results being not worse in a month's time.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the update about Eric. Poor little guy. I think you are doing the right thing by not putting him under general anethesia unless you have to.

Kim here...I don't know if you're able to get something like Purina's FortiFlora there (it's a probiotic, very tasty to cats), or something similar, but I sprinkle a bit (like a seasoning) on Derry's canned, to get him to eat it, because he's such a kibblehead. Not necessarily FortiFlora...Just something Eric would find tasty, a bit sprinkled on the canned to entice him. If needed?
Good luck.
It's so incredibly stressful when our fur "kids" are not well, especially if there's no firm diagnosis. :-/
Precious sweet Eric...we are so sorry to hear you are feeling less than purrfect. Please please try your new food your Mum and Dad would be so happy. Keeping you in your purrs...Marg had a button on her blog so we 'borrowed'it for our blog.

Sweet Eric, we are purring (and mum is praying) for you. Sparkle the Designer Cat had a post the other day about some sprinkles they tried over their food that made them want to eat the food they didn't like. If your mum is interested in trying it, we will order it for you and send it to you if they don't ship over to the pond. Here is the link to the post: http://www.sparklecat.com/diary/authentic-kitty-sprinkles-taste-test

ReplyDeleteThis seems to have come on so suddenly. I hope that Eric can fight this. I remember reading that Ginger Jasper ate like a shark after he was given some medicine, after suffering a loss of appetite. I've no idea what he was given. Could that help Eric?

ReplyDeleteLove,
Marilynn, Grace & Company
We are so sorry that your liver isn't working as well as it should. We agree with your decision concerning the biopsy. The liver is such a complex organ but it is one that can regenerate itself if conditions are caught early.
ReplyDeleteIf your doctor says you can tolerate protein, Forti-Flora
a probiotic which has protein, sprinkled on your food may make it more palatable. The gold standard for us, when we really go off food, is the medication The Poupounette gang got for Ginger Jasper.
We love you and pray for you throughout our day.
Ah Eric! Please feel better buddy!! Big purrs to you pal!!
