Easy Like Sunday and Selfie and Update.

Thank you to everybody for all the purrs and good thoughts you have been sending my way. It is hard to think that this time last week I was so ill that mum and dad didn't think I would make it.
The Clavaseptin pills I had been taking were making me feel very ill and weak with really bad diarrhoea and vomiting so I had to cut short the 10 day course.
I had an emergency appointment and saw another vet who gave me an antibiotic injection which lasts 14 days. Mum and dad didn't know at the time that it was Convenia and they didn't know about all the bad side effects it can cause. Within 24 hours I was very weak and kept lying down after every few footsteps. I laid on the bed stretched out looking almost comatose. They were going to take me in through the night but were afraid they might be told that nothing could be done for me. They decided to wait until the morning and kept telling me how much they loved me. In the morning I was slightly better and have continued to improve every day. After being so ill they have told the vet they don't want me to have any more antibiotics. I still have blood in my urine but it is not causing me any problems. It was only discovered by chance when my blood and urine was being rechecked after being on my thyroid pills.
My vet has sent my urine away to see if a culture can be grown. If nothing shows there, I will have an ultrasound scan.
I have been taking Mirtazapine tablets to help me want to eat. I was taking one every 24 hours, but when I ate 6 x 85g cans (approximately 16 ounces total) of food in 24 hours mum said it needed to be cut back to every 36 hours.
I have started to take short walks in the fields again. Mum and dad carry me there and back so I don't tire myself. Hopefully I will soon be able to lead the way again!
Okay, on to my easy Sunday.

We have been getting lots of sun so I have been napping under the azaleas again.

It feels good to get the sun on my back.

There has been quite a cold wind though so I go back to my pot when I get chilly.

I haven't felt like practising my selfies this week so this is the next best thing.

I like to drink from the horse troughs and I can see myself in them. You get two Flynns for the price of one!

  2. Darn those antibiotics... You are one tough cookie, though, and it sounds like you're winning the battle. We recommend a few walks, continued rest, and lots of sun baths in your pot. We're letting the whiskers go for the moment, but still keeping our paws crossed.

  7. Do you think the blood could be from the thyroid pills since you didn’t have it before? Just a thought. I’m so glad you’re coming around. I had a shot of that once years ago way before it cost Prancer Pie his life. I don’t think I’ll get another one ever again. Sending healing purrz and kisses.

  20. Flynn, we hope you continue to improve every day -- we're continuing to purr and purray for you. Paws crossed the culture and sensitivity test (what it's called here, anyway) comes back negative. Good for your beans for doing that--it's not commonly done here, unless the human knows about it. The vets our human has dealt with certainly have never mentioned it.

    Headbutts and hugs.

  23. Oh lovely Flynn, we couldn't be any happier to hear this and have finally let out a huge big sigh of relief. You are obviously still very wiped out but with your two humans in your corner you'll have the very best care and support to boost you back to health.

The first I ever read of this convenia was from Prancer Pie's Mum and it scared me witless. I know one cat's experience is not definitive evidence and could have been for a multitude of reasons but reading around there seem to be a pattern. When Magic was at her ordinary vet I was offered it as it would 'make it easier for me' than wrestling tablets into her esp when they wrongly diagnosed HCM. I totally refused when I realised it was that drug as she was so sick I couldn't risk it. I am utterly convinced that due to how critically ill she was from undiagnosed Diabetic ketoacidosis that that would have pushed her over the edge.

At the vet school after her correct diagnosis she needed some antibiotics for a clipper rash and the vet offered type with a reduced dosing and I asked if it was convenia as I wouldn't allow it. The vet there wasn't keen on it either and said they don't really use it except as a thirdline antibiotic and only if it is that particular antibiotic which is specifically indicated. So I sort of guessed that general vet practices are using it for convenience (as per the name) rather than when it is indicated and there isn't a great acceptance of it from those using a stronger research base. It seems like it just seems to make a sick animal worse and more if you, Speedy and Prancer Pie are anything to go by.

Red, your little ginger buddy, says you've just to keep gathering your strength and take it easy. He loves watching me get a fright each time I see your blog pop up cos you two look so alike. Gingies rule!

  25. Flynn we are all running around with our tails in the air knowing that you feel better. That Convenia is tough stuff. One of us had it before as this family member refuses pills and liquids and, well, bites.
Enjoy the sun my furend. We will keep the purrs and prayers coming.

  29. Flynn, I am soooo happy you are starting to spend some time in the field again. You love it there! When Cody had a DIRE reaction to vaccines a few months ago, he was EXACTLY as what you stated here: "Within 24 hours I was very weak and kept lying down after every few footsteps. I laid on the bed stretched out looking almost comatose"....he was projectile vomiting and extremely ill. I am thinking twice about ANY vaccines moving forward and I will never, ever do two at once.
I will also be hesitant giving him an antibiotic shot (but I have in the past and he was fine), with age, sometimes these things have negative effects on our kitties.

  31. We are so glad to hear you are continuing to get well, Flynn. We were quite worried about you there for a while.

The Mom put in our vet files to never give us the Convenia injection after she heard about all the yucky side effects it can cause. We sure are glad that you are okay!

  32. Flynn, we love your twofer selfie, but what we love best is how much better you are doing, We have been just as frightened as your humans at how poorly you were. 43. Flynn, we're glad to see you're feeling better, eating, and getting out for some fresh air and sunshine. Those injectable antibiotics are convenient, but we're always a bit nervous about them because if something goes wrong, there's no way to get it out of your body - not like stopping a pill. We hope you continue to get better.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Wow, we are sorry you've been so sick, buddy. Glad you are improving! We look forward to gearing reports of you walking out to your fields and frolicking on your own!
P.S. Caster got a long acting antibiotic shot a couple weeks ago when he went to the vet to get the nail sheath that was stuck in his eye removed. I'm not sure on the name of the antibiotic (I need to check the receipt print off of services from the visit), but now I'm worried it might have been Convenia. He is fine and hasn't had any negative reaction, but I had no idea it was bad. Thank you for mentioning that - I won't be going that route again.

  45. Flynn you have no idea how thrilled we are to still have you here with us :) We knew how ill you were and were very very worried. So glad you are getting stronger and eating more. Fantastic to see you out enjoying the sunshine and your flowerpot.

  49. We love seeing you outside enjoying the sun on your furs and being potted! Knowing you are feeling better has brought tears of joy to our eyes. Have you ever taken an antibiotic that you could tolerate? Good to know its name for your own safety. You remain in our prayers, dearest boy. We love you like you were our own.
The photo of you reflected in the water is so beautiful. Your mum captured a magic moment.

  50. Wow, the medicine you were being given did a number on you, eh, Flynn? I haven't heard too many good things about Convenia, and I am glad that you are mostly being allowed to heal; yourself. Those six tins of food may have been overdoing it, but they probably gave you a lot of what you needed, nonetheless. It's good to see you outside again. Continued improvement to you.

  59. Flynn, we are glad to hear you are improving and also happy to know the possible cause for all your troubles! Antibiotics can work a number one a kitty for sure. Mojo used to only be able to take Zenequin, and only if we were on his allergy/immune suppressing meds at the same time. Otherwise, he would get terrible diarrhea. Sending more purrs for your continued path to full recovery!
