Sunday Selfie and an Update.
I am taking part in the Sunday Selfies with the Kitties Blue at The Cat on my Head.
You can see more selfies here.
My Update.
As you know, I was unable to tolerate the Carbimazole for my hyperthyroidism, so after a month off medication to give my body chance to recover I went on Felimazole which is the same as Methimazole. Unfortunately after 2 weeks I was becoming ill again and had to stop them too.
I have been off medication again for a week but recovered much more quickly this time because mum and dad knew to look out for the first signs that it wasn't going well.
Mum has discussed natural medicine with my vet and ordered Thyroid Support Gold for me which will take 3 weeks to get here according to Amazon. That is bacon flavoured drops that can be put on my food.
The vet rang mum this morning and said he has talked to another vet and has been able to get Methimazole as a transdermal gel, so they went out and collected a pack this morning.
I am having it rubbed into my ear once a day to start with to see how I go with it. If it is the ingredients that I am allergic to, then I still won't be able to stay on it. It may be that my digestive tract can't take the pills but I will be okay with it being absorbed into my bloodstream. We will know how I am getting on with it by the time the Thyroid Gold arrives.

Thank God that you have the Gold coming though I have not heard of it till now, but thank God the Vet was good enough to try on his own to help our Flynn with the transdermal gel. Admiral did splendidly on it till she passed for another reason. I hope dear Flynn can tolerate it as well. Need a quick blood test as you know with a few days to see what the levels are and adjust accordingly.

ReplyDeleteWe are glad to hear you are trying some options and hope that you find one that doesn't upset your tummy. Reactions to the 'imazoles' are common...do any vets do RadioIodine treatment there?
ReplyDeleteCaitie was on methimazole for the last few years of her life, and since she didn't take pills, we had it compounded into a liquid and gave her a squirt every morning and night. Hoping the transdermal works just as well for Flynn.

ReplyDeleteFlynn, we have our paws crossed for the transdermal meds.
ReplyDeleteWe know Cheri at Cats of Wildcat Woods is going through a bad time with her Lily right now (cancer), but one or two of Cheri's cats were hyper-t as well and she treated them homeopathically--specially to support the organs, not to "cure" the hyper-t. Anyway, if the natural meds don't help, it might be worth asking Cheri what she had used.
Lots of purrs from us. Take care.
Wow, Flynn, you have one super Mum and one super Dad too. They sure are trying to help you and so we just send tons of purrs and prayers that the new medicine works. What a trouper you are too. Lots of good thoughts coming your way.

ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear you are having such troubles with the thyroid meds. again Flynn. Our human has thyroid disease & it can be tricky to find the right medication & dose. Hopefully the transdermal gel will do the trick since it bypasses your digestive tract & the bacon drops will arrive soon if they are needed. We are so glad that Mom & Dad knew what side effects to watch for & stopped the pills before you got really sick again. You are in good hands & Mom and Dad will take excellent care of you as always. You look very mancat handsome in your selfie today. Your camera work is getting better all the time. We are crossing our tails & tootsies that the gel rubbed on your ears is perfect for treating your thyroid disease & it's always nice to get one's ears rubbed as a bonus. Hang in there Flynn. You have bunches of friends cheering your on & want you to maintain the wonderful progress you have made with improving your health. At least no more having to pee in the cup for Mom. We still marvel at your ability to do such a thing!

P,S. Something your mum and dad might investigate is Hills y/d cat food. It's for thyroid cats.It may be an option if you're unable to tolerate the medication.
ReplyDeleteFlynn I will be purring that you get the same benefit from the gel and it doesn't bother you to have it in your ear and/or the Thyroid Gold your Mum ordered......it's nice to know there are some alternatives to the pills - just in case I begin to have problems too! You look happy in your photo my friend and I've got my paws crossed that you feel better and better and better as time goes by.

It's good to have some alternative medicines to work with. My Tungsten gets the gel in her ears twice a day, and it is keeping her numbers in the normal range. I hope it works for you, Flynn.
ReplyDeleteGood to hear. We have a senior foster (Nemo) and he is paper thin, we want a second opinion from our vet so we can see if he is hyperthyroid OR kidney trouble. Hearing there are transdermal gels (as opposed to tablets is a truly GOOD bit of news.
ReplyDeleteGood luck to you and Mum and Dad, and we send our best love Flynn.
Harvey, Miranda, Silver and Marjorie
Best of luck to you Flynn...we hope you can find a medicine to help you!
ReplyDeleteMom is really happy that you liked the decal; here is the information for it: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0090NJ6ZS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
ReplyDeleteEven better, it comes from your part of the world!
Hi! Nice selfie!
ReplyDeleteHey, we just now are paying attention purrpurrly to your blog and you especially...we here think our Minko might have this thyroid issue, too...hasn't been diagnosed as yet, but meowmy has a hunch. It can't be pancreatitis as the vet was thinking...he only throws up on an empty stomach. And will not eat at all, unless meowmy feeds him, 2x a day...6 or 7 ounce total. he otherwise acts normal...if not getting fed he hides all the time, etc. He looks like a bone rack. went t=down to 6.2 lbs from 9 or so...but with meowmy's vigilant feeding routine, he is back up to 8 lbs:)
Have a great week, and we hope your meds arrive soon!
Sorry you couldn't tolerate the other pills Flynn. It is great they could find the transdermal for you though. Good luck my sweet friend! We are sending our POTP that it will work or the natural supplements will.

ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about your problem with the meds, Flynn. My Angel Miscio also had the same problem with the pills. She tolerated the transdermal gel really well. Surprised your vet did not go there immediately after your first bad reaction. Here is hope, purrs, and prayers that the gel will work for you and you will feel better.
