Eric's Day Flashback - Forbidden Sunspots.

This week the flashback comes from December 2010 and is called:

Forbidden Sunspots.
Yesterday when I got caught checking out the Bonsai tree, that was not the only reason I was caught out. Can you believe we are not allowed on the worktops? You only have to look to see that it is the most wonderful sunspot and mum thinks I shouldn't be up there. She's crazy!

Anyway, after I had enjoyed the sun for a while I decided to see what the little tree smelled like.

Then I checked to make sure it had enough water. Nope, looks too dry to me. Mum should be grateful that I let her know it needed watering instead of making me get down.

This is the Bean's Christmas Cactus. It used to belong to our dad's mum and is very old. They brought it with them when they moved when dad was a very small boy so must be at least 56 years old. It lives in the porch. Mum just put it on the worktop to take the photo. It lives outdoors in the summer and has often had big pieces broken off when we get strong winds, but it seems to survive everything.
Update.
We still have the cactus so it is now at least 62 years old. It doesn't have as many buds this year so may be coming towards the end of it's life. We did have strange weather this year though, so that could be the reason for less buds.

  4. Yeah, its hard when the sunspots on the countertops are forbidden! Lucky fer US, if there are sunspots on the counerrtops, they are also on floor at the deck door.

Congrats on yer cactus. We have a Hoya that is 35 years old but that sure isnt 62!

  5. We don't understand why the humans try to keep us off the counters. Don't they know we're up there when they're not around

  10. WOW! An old plant passed down through the years is a very SPECIAL plant indeed. You take care of it Flynn! It is a grand spot for sunpuddles though - maybe you could talk her into just one fleece blanket up there for you to sun yourself?? Hugs and good luck!

    Love, Sammy

  18. Sixty-two! I wonder how long they last in the wilderness with animals eating them and the weather eroding them.

  19. We do not have any sun puddles in the kitchen. So we are allowed to enjoy them all!

  20. We didn't quite get why you aren't allowed to be there... it's in your house? You're the boss? Everything is yours!

Mom says that she'd like to have some cat-free-spots as well, but that she's too lazy to be consequent, so she figured that she wouldn't even try. Haha.

  21. Very cute flashback. I can see why your Mum wouldn't want you up there with a poinsetta nearby- they are poisonous. Beautiful cactus, I am glad you still have it. I have some about 25 years old , but I never put them outdoors.

  26. What a lovely cactus! The last time our mom had one, it would bloom at Thanksgiving or MLK Day in January. It finally gave up the ghost altogether.

P.S. Eric paid as much attention to that rule as we do!!

  27. Aren't worktop's the best,Eric? Beans keep such interesting things up there. Maybe you just thought the fine old cactus was a bit lonely and needed some kitty company. You gave your mum such beautiful photos of you, dear. We love you and will always miss the kitty company you shared with us.

  30. That handsome Eric sure was a free spirit, wasn't he? Lovely pictures, and a great flashback!

The lifespan (so far) of that Christmas cactus is phenomenal. 62 years! WOW!

  31. Our kitchen has a big south exposed window but we too are not allowed up on those nice warm counters. We say phooey, we will go to the dining room then and se the sunpuddles on the nice soft carpet...or...um...the dining room table, MOL!!"What a lovely Christmas (zygo) cactus! Amazing! Petcretary had some big ones but she gave them away when she moved from Canada to the US, way back in 1987...it bloomed like that twice a year. We think they like the cooler days and long dark nights to get them to bloom well. Petcretary has just bought a couple of new ones, they are scrawny looking besides yours:)
