First of all I want to thank everyone of you for all the lovely comments and beautiful tributes to our boy. I knew he was loved but never realised how well and by how many. There are now 231 messages left for us! I find it unbelievable but it is very comforting to us. I will visit everyone but it will take time.
This is not a tribute to Eric, that will come soon. I am going to create his memorial page but want to take my time over it to make sure I do him justice.
We always said Eric had a big old fashioned face and 3 years ago I used one of our favourite photos of him and made this picture on one of the free photo sites.
It seems very appropriate now. It was only a little over a month ago that he felt well enough to climb his favourite oak tree. Now he is looking down on us. We miss him so much.
I know many of you were very confused that I posted only an hour before Eric had to be helped to the Rainbow Bridge. Last Monday morning Eric was still wobbly but in the afternoon he wanted to go for a walk so we took him into the field beside the garden. He really enjoyed himself eating grass and looking into mouse holes. He even chased Flynn. When we got back indoors he got in the Ham-Mick and had a wash while Ivor played with Flynn. When Flynn's tail flicked by him he played with it. His eyes were big and bright as they always used to be and his fur felt so soft. He looked the best he had for several weeks. We really thought he had turned the corner and would get better. We were so happy and I started that post to schedule for Tuesday.
Eric then went to sleep on our bed. When he woke up it was obvious that something terrible had happened. The post was never finished, I just hit publish because I wanted to share that he had a good day.
We took him to the on call vet. We don't think he was in any pain, but he was frightened and confused. It now seems that he had been having a series of strokes. I asked if he was at risk of a saddle thrombus and was told that he was.
We are just so thankful that we were able to help our precious boy make his journey peacefully with our love and kisses, and our last memory of him is peacefully going to sleep.

We are just so sorry about dear Eric and Dad still cires when he thinks about him, That boy was loved, loved, loved. Our best hugs to Flynn too, we know how much he misses his brother.
ReplyDeleteYes, Eric was a big part of the CB, and his loss will be felt by us all. It doesn't even seem quite real, yet.
ReplyDeleteWe are very glad you've been able to find comfort with the messages. Please give Flynn a hug and kiss from us.
It is comforting to know that Eric was feeling so well until just before he was ready to go. I am very glad you were able to have that good walk outdoors with him, too. Saying goodbye to our loved ones is wrenching, but your warmth and love flew right along with him as he went On to the Bridge.
ReplyDeleteI had two Big Boy brothers some years ago, Mr. Teeth and Clark. They were well and truly bonded, and when Mr. Teeth had to leave us rather suddenly, I worried so much about Clarkie. But after a period of being a little lost, he stepped right up to be Chief ManCat and in fact enjoyed his role as "alpha cat" for quite a few years. I know that all kitties are different, but I hope that sweet Flynn will find his way in his new role. I am sure he is being a huge comfort to his Mom & Dad, and vice-versa.
So glad to read your post today. We are still sending you purrs and purrayers XOXOXOXO
We continue to think of you and Eric. It is good to know that he and Flynn had such a good day together the day before he left-he was a wonderful cat-purrs to you and to Flynn
ReplyDeletePurrs to you all. What a terrible thing to have to go through - for Eric and for you. I am glad his last day was so much fun. We all loved Eric a lot and he will be missed so much.
ReplyDeleteJackie, Igor and Flynn, we are glad your last few hours with Eric were as normal as could have been. And we are happy that Eric was not in pain. We are also glad he got to spend the end of his days being loved on. He deserved that. That would be the best way to go to the Rainbow Bridge. I have thought of you everyday this week, sending my love across the miles. You will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers. We will miss hearing of Eric's adventures with Flynn. Please give Flynn a big hug from us here in the US at The Very Best Cats.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful picture of sweet Eric. We loved him very much and will miss him greatly. We are keeping you all in our thoughts, hearts and prayers. Hugs and nose kisses
ReplyDeleteI am so happy to see a post...You three have been in my thoughts very much this past week. It is comforting to know that Eric's last day was filled with all the things he loved, we could only all be so lucky to have our final hours be filled the same way. Thank you for telling us this, it does make Eric's passing a little easier to bear.
ReplyDeleteI hope Flynn isn't too confused, please love him up for me and give him a kiss, too.
xx Trish
Reading every details words and collects all the images we can think.
ReplyDeleteI hope everything is going well to all of you. Eric is great, he was very thoughtful to all of us, he is a very good kid and a wonderful partner.

Sadly we understand all too well and share tears with you - you loved him while he was here and gave him all you could and at the end you were there with him and gave him the best gift
ReplyDeleteI thought maybe it had been something like that. A bit of good times and then, whatever was bothering him, acted up again.
ReplyDeleteWhat a life he had with you.
XO,
JC and The Purr and Fur Gang
It warms our hearts that you got to have one last good day with Eric doing the things he enjoyed.
ReplyDeleteMe and Mom is crying again. We just miss him so much. But we are so glad to see your post today and let's us know Eric had his fabulous day with his family and his favorite places before he left to the rainbow bridge.
ReplyDeleteSending soft purrs to your family and special hug for Flynn.
Many Kisses and love

We do understand, and we are glad that you and Eric had a good final day here together. Surely you will see your sweet boy again, and until then he will live on in your hearts and memories. Hugs and much love to you all.
ReplyDeleteWe're so glad that Eric had a good day before he had to leave. There is a big Eric-sized hole in the CB now. We sending comforting purrs to all of you. XOXOXO
ReplyDeleteDo not feel odd that Eric received so many comments about him going over the Bridge. He earned all of them. Eric and Flynn have been part of our blogging lives for longer than we have been here, or at least as long as the blog-cats who came before.
ReplyDeleteFor ourselves, we miss Eric. He was one special cat! We are glad to read that he had good days right to the end. That is the hope of us all.
We put that wunnerful graphic of Eric on our sidebar. We might should do that for all kitties gone over, but TBT says we have to make choices sometimes. We dint have any doubt about making Eric a choice.
We unnerstand that some decisions about going to te Bridge got to be made suddenly. Sometimes the kitties make that choice (like LC did); sometimes the Beins make the decision, (like TBT did fer Skeeter).
Either way, they are usually good decisions and we accept that.
Beins know best about such decisions. We mean, they KNOW stuff and when we live with them, we can trust them on that.
When we were new here, one of the best messages we got from Skeeter from over the Bridge was that he remembered the last seconds here with TBT gazing into his eyes and saying how much he loved him.
We know Eric remembers that too.
This is such a beautiful graphic of Eric. How wonderful that you had that special time with him and he enjoyed himself. Take all the time you need to recover from losing your precious boy. We're here for you.
ReplyDeleteI''m really glad he got a good last whack at Flynn's tail. For some reason that makes me kinda smile...
ReplyDeleteWe're glad to hear you had a nice day with Eric before he had to be helped to the Bridge. We have thought about Flynn so much since his brother is gone. Purrs and hugs...
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting and saying more about Eric's last day and how things seemed to be going so well - it is important he did the stuff he loved and his last day was happy. But then nature is cruel sometimes - we guess there's a reason we don't understand. When a body gives up but the spirit within continues.... And we know Eric is watching us - and that picture is beautiful. May we steal it for our side bar ?
ReplyDeletePurrs to you all, and nose rubs to Flynn of course.
It is lovely to think of him in his favorite tree.
ReplyDeleteYou did him a loving kindness not to allow him to suffer, though we know it must have been so hard. Sending you many purrs.
I am so glad he had a good last day.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking Eric probably had the best last day ever. Sounds like he was happy till the end. I'm so sorry he had to go, but he went with love.
ReplyDeleteWe agree - sounds like Eric had an almost perfect last day and we are glad that you were be able to be with him as he passed, surrounded by your life. A day on the farm with his brother, and a snooze on the bed - well done Eric!!

We are so pleased that Eric and Flynn had a lovely last walk in the fields with you. How wonderful that Eric climbed his favourite tree we bet he was so pleased with himself.
ReplyDeleteOur thoughts are with you all and hope Flynn will remember his last tail flick from Eric.

Eric clearly was one of the best-loved cats in the Blogosphere, and he will be with you always.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds as though, after a life full of love, Eric had a lovely last day with those he loved most. He was a lucky boy.
Purrs,
The Chans
We're so happy that Eric had such a good day before he went to the Bridge. We know you miss him a lot and that Flynn must too. We loved him and are glad that we got to know him.
ReplyDeleteThe Florida Furkids
Thank you for letting all of us know about the illness of Eric, and that you passed a quiet time with him before the Bridge. I live and work in Burundi (central Africa), and have always looked forward to your regular posts about the boys and their adventures - and hope to see more in the future, as you all settle in to a new routiene.
ReplyDeleteBlessings - dianabuja and her African pussies.
We are so glad that you had such a nice time before it was time for Eric to go. You did such a good thing to let him go. That is the hardest thing to do. Your three have been right up front in our purrs and prayers. Sending tons and tons of huge hugs.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you have posted again about what happened with Eric. He was obviously a fighter right to the end and his thwack at Flynn's tail makes me smile too for some reason! I know Flynn is getting lots of lovin' and memories of the two together will be sweet. Caro xx
ReplyDeleteWe're continuing to send you purrs and purrayers. There's not much that any of us can say or write to help you through the grief, but you are all surrounded by love and Light.
ReplyDeletePeace.
My eyes are leaking. You are incredible to take the time to write to all of us and let us know the series of events. It does help us understand because myself and so many others were in shock.
ReplyDeleteJust looking at his face again brought on the tears. It is so hard to believe he is gone. If it is hard for ME, it is that much worse for you.
I am wondering how Flynn is holding up?
Continuing to send you MUCH LOVE and PURRS AND PRAYERS!
Caren and Cody
You were so brave to help Eric in his journey. We know he appreciated that and all the care, kindness and love you gave to him thought his life. Prayers, purrs and hugs from the kites at The Cat on My Head, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Josette
ReplyDeleteWe too have had you, Ivor and Eric and Flynn in our thoughts the past week. It is good to know that Eric had a good day that day. Eric's passing hit so many of us very hard. We sure will miss him.
ReplyDeleteWe continue to purr for you...and Flynn and hope all of you are doing okay.
oxoxox
Thank you for this beautiful post. It was very sad, but we're so glad that Eric had one final wonderful day with his family. We are concerned for Flynn and hope that he is doing OK. We know that he is getting lots of love. Perhaps,in time, he will be like Kitty YumBum and mentor the next generation.

Thank you for sharing Eric last day with us. He was blessed with a very good life at your home and even his last hours were filled with good stuff. Still sending purrs.
ReplyDeleteComing to grips with Eric's passing has been difficult for us all. Thank you for taking time to tell us about his final day. We take great comfort in knowing that Eric spent that day enjoying his loving family, lovely farm and doing things he so enjoyed.
ReplyDeleteHe did have a marvelous face, didn't he. Noble, wise and wonderful. That was him. We loved him as if he were our own. Thank you for sharing your amazing boy
with us. He has immeasurably enriched our lives. We
miss him so.
You are in our thoughts and prayers. Please give Flynnie a big hug and kiss from us and tell him that we
love him very much. . All of our love, always.
Hi Flynn, Jackie and Ivor!!!
ReplyDeleteMom and I will never forget Eric's sweet face...at first we had trouble telling the boys apart..then all of a sudden Mom said look Eric has orange sherbet smudges on his face...she always thought both Eric and Flynn furs were the same color as delicious bowl of orange sherbet and vanilla ice cream..
Lots of hugs and purrs to you all
Madi and Mom
I just heard of Eric's passing through another blog. What a handsome kitty he was. Really glad you were able to spend time with your beautiful Kitty. My thoughts are prayers are with you you.
ReplyDeleteSue B
how wonderful that Eric had one last romp with Flynn! we know first hand how quickly things can happen - it was like that with Gramma Trixie - fine one minute and then a stroke and gone fast after that. You are all wrapped in our love and prayers.
ReplyDeleteContinuing our warm thoughts your way and thanking YOU for sharing Eric (and Flynn) with us.
ReplyDeleteHe had such a wonderful life with you and his parting was bittersweet. He is always going to remain int he hearts of all who loved him.
ReplyDeletecats of wildcat woods
We are just so sad that is happened. We never met in person, but we just loved Eric. He will be in our hearts forever.
ReplyDeleteBrenda, Boots & Ozzie
It sounds like Eric's last day was one of the best he'd had in a while. That will have been his last memories, not the confusion that came after: being in the fresh air, hunting for mice, eating grass and being with his brother. Those memories may hurt as much as his absence for a time, but they will come to be Eric's greatest gift to you. Good luck to all there.

It was nice of Eric to let you have another round of good memories with him before the end. He would want us all to remember him playing in the fields, chasing mice and have a wrestle with Flynn! It's hard now, but pretty soon the good memories will take the place of the loss.

ReplyDeleteWe loved seeing that lovely pic of Eric and this update. Sending continued hugs and purrs to all of you. The wonderful thing about having so many photos is each one contains a happy memory.
ReplyDeleteWe are so sorry to hear abowt Eric. He and Flynn always wrote back when we blogged, even thogh we haven't blogged much. Mom showed their pictures from the farm because they were so beautiful.
ReplyDeletePlease know you are in our thoughts.
Lots of luv,

It must have been confusing but I guess it is kind of a comfort that he was able to have a pleasant day with all of you before leaving for the Bridge.
ReplyDeleteWe send more purrs and hugs.
Mum has thought and thought about her conversation with you and knows that Eric was giving you some happy memories to stay with you when he went. You both gave him the ultimate gift of love and let him go peacefully and without pain. that is true love for your precious by. He was loved very much and he knew he was. The photo is very beautiful.. All the comments showed just how loved he was and still is. Much love to Flynn. GJ xx
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't always help I know; but let me, Mom Linda, share this with you. We once had 3 Siberian huskies. And each one had a lovely walk with me and we had play time in the back yard on the day they simply dropped. Each one had hidden tumor that cause them to bleed silently internally. No pain whatsoever. The memory of seeing them so alive and happy and well holds me to this day and they all died within 9 mos of each other at 11, 12 and 14 yrs of age. warm hugs to Flynn and to you Jack and Ivor
ReplyDeleteA small comfort you were all able to spend his last day happy and well. I know how difficult it is to make such a hard decision but I'm sure you did the right thing for your beloved boy. He never doubted he was loved every day. Purrs and hugs to you all!!
ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful photo of Eric and seems very appropriate. I am glad that his last day was a great one and he did the things that he enjoys. Remember him that way, happy and pain free. I'm very sorry for your loss. You all have been in my thoughts since I read the post.
ReplyDeleteWe had been putting off reading this post all day. When we saw Eric's picture we all started having the leaky eyes. Such a beautiful picture of him. Thank you for sharing his last day with us. Thank you for sharing his wonderful life with us. We will never forget that sweet mancat.
ReplyDeleteThis made Mom cry all over again.
ReplyDeleteYesterday our Mr Jinx had a droopy tail and all we could think about was Eric. Turns out Mr Jinx has a broke tail. Srly. But he'll be ok once it heals up. WE are thinking of you all.
(((love)))
Thank you so much for sharing Eric with us. I am so glad the sweet boy had a wonderful with everyone. Our eyes still leak and our prayers go across that big lake between us. I know Eric is in 'the future' watching over all of you from his favorite tree!

ERic had a good life and he did pretty well right up to the end. You did good by the wonderful boy.
ReplyDeleteLove and purrs to you all. We hope Flynn is adjusting to being an only cat.
So happy to hear that Eric's last day was so nice. We're hoping that Flynn isn't too sad. We know you're devastated. Our purrs are with you.
ReplyDeleteAs the others have said he had the gift of a good day, filled with his favorite people and his dear brother. You had the blessing of being there with him at the end. Scooby was suddenly too, and mom is glad she made the choice to stay home that afternoon instead of go shopping. She was there for him, as you were for Eric. Love, Hugs,
ReplyDeleteS&S & Mom Lynne

Thanks for letting us know about Eric's last day. We are so glad he was out in the field, checking out mouse holes.
ReplyDeleteWe always enjoy reading about Eric and Flynn's adventures. Especially those involving mouse hunts. We will miss Eric very much and we hope Flynn is doing okay. Take care, Jackie and Ivor. And hugs to Flynn.
ReplyDeleteoh Jackie, oh Ivor, this is so very similar to how we lost Ryker, and the suddenness seems so especially hard for some reason. (Ryker, too, was having an idyllic day, and then...suddenly...)
ReplyDeleteWe can only imagine how very much you must miss him. As do we all. You are in our hearts and our thoughts.

We are so happy Eric had a great day before making his way to the Bridge. That will be the best memory for you to have too :)

We are thinking and purring for you all. We are particularly worried about Flynn since he & Eric were best buds. We hope he is adjusting alright. There were so many posts about Eric and many more comments at other blogs as well. We will really miss him!
ReplyDeleteIt comforts us that right until near the end Eric was happy and comfortable and enjoying life ~ that's what any cat would want. So although he went to the Bridge suddenly, better that than a long drawn out illness which might have hurted him.
ReplyDeleteWe will always love Eric so much and we know you will always miss him.
We so hope little Flynn is coping with out him ~ we would love to know he is OK. PURRS.
Lots of luvs frum alla us Hotties.
ReplyDeleteThank you for letting us know about Eric's last hours on earth. He was SO loved by all of us and he was able to be with you and comforted and kissed until it was his time to go. Sending comforting purrrs to you. Please give Flynn a purr and a sweet kiss on the nose from us.

I was just catching up on Glogirly's blog and saw a mention of your sweet boy passing. I just read the story and am shedding some tears for you. I know that pain all too well and wish there was something comforting that could be said. You will be in my thoughts xo.
ReplyDeleteA big hug for all the family...
ReplyDeleteEric is resting in our hearts.
Purrrrrs.
PS: My friend, continue dominating the Bridge.
We know your pain.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you hear your feelings today. You two really helped Eric at that last moment, which is wonderful. He left in peace and quite comforted with your permission to go. He is safe now.
I know that heartache. It will take time. Flynn needs your assurance as he is missing his brofur.
Just know that all of you are in our prayers.
Love Miles Pierro and Rosemary
Thanks for sharing Eric's last day with us. I am so glad that it was such a wonderful one.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing some of Erics'final day. His image imposed over the oak tree is lovely. He was a unique cat both in looks and in personality. Eric's looks were so distinct with his plentiful body, floofy tummy & the distinct splotch of ginger that graced his nose. His personality was also large with an aire of confidence, he was up for any adventure. Flynn was a wonderful partner on these adventures as long as he did not step out of line or try to steal Eric's mousie hole. If Flynn did momentaryily bother Eric, Eric resolved the issue with a good swat and they would continue onward through the fields,
ReplyDeleteEric was one of those special cats that earns a place in our hearts & when Eric died a part of our heart broke as it would for our own.
Now our concern is for you both as Eric's parents & for Flynn. You gave Eric a fantastic life. He wanted for nothing and enjoyed everything about living among the fields of Devon and the best hunting grounds a cat could dream of. Eric loved chatting with his Mom & playing with his Dad. Eric was fortunate to have Flynn to share his life with.
It was kind of Flynn to let Eric rest in his ham-mick on his last day. Flynn will adjust, but since a cat has no way to understand what has happened, he will be confused & grieve for a time, My hope for you all is that the intense sadness will gradually lift and a new normal will begin for you all. Thank you for sharing Eric with us. You made me laugh on difficult days and Eric brightened my World with each post. I know that you & Ivor miss Eric more than anyone can know. Please remember that no matter how hard the parting, it is always worth the journey you made together.
Thanks for coming by to share how you are. We are glad Flynn is ok. Maybe you and he will be able to blog again soon if you feel up to it xx
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing all of this with us. We are so happy to hear you were with him to comfort him when he was scared and that he left you so peacefully. We still can't help but think about him...and you. We know there's a hole in your heart.
ReplyDeleteWe just wanted you to know we're thinking about you.
xoxo
love,
Katie & Glogirly
I so understand how you feel. When we lost Alex, I couldn't believe the love and support that I received from the blog community. It blew me away and helped ease the pain (ever so slightly). A similar thing happened with Alex as did with Eric. About an hour before the vet was due to arrive to help him to the bridge he walked across the room and went to the liter box. He seemed more alert and stable than before. I was doubting that we should proceed. Fortunately, when this happened, I was on the phone with our cousin a vet, who told me that we had to proceed.
ReplyDeleteHang in there... and know that Eric is smiling down at you all sending his love
Just wanted to check in and see how you are all doing. I am sure that Eric enjoyed his day outside and playing with Flynn. I know he is looking down and watching over Flynn. Love to all of you.
ReplyDeleteWe are thinking of Eric, and praying for the comfort of you, his family. Special purrs for poor sweet Flynn.

Just as much as you, they want those last moments together to be memorable, full of love and hope, so glad you had the time to share it with him and us.
ReplyDeleteI am in tears again.praying for yours and Flynn's peace of heart. XXXOOO
ReplyDeleteYou did the right thing and he will always love you for it. comforting purrz.
ReplyDeleteJust dropping by to wish you and Flynn a Good (if not yet "happy") Easter together. Easter is a good day to think about our beloved Humans and kitties and others who have Gone On before us, and to remember how much love we shared with them. Sending you purrs and love!
ReplyDeleteHi Again -- thanks for dropping by my blog. It's really hard, isn't it? Pumpkin also (we think) had a stroke! Just a few weeks before Eric. It was as you described...fine one minute and then something terrible. We were with him at the end, as well. It just broke my heart to lose Pearl and Pumpkin but this is the downside of having pets. I intend to go to the cat rescue shelter and get another cat at the end of the summer because our house just feels so empty without a little kitty sitting in our window. Even our neighbors comment! Best to you.
ReplyDeleteThinking of Eric with love each and every day.
ReplyDeleteWe send you our love and wish you a blessed Easter. Kisses and hugs for sweet Flynnie.
We stopped by again just to say we're thinking of Eric and all of you...and hope you have a nice Easter.
ReplyDeleteThe mom asks that you give Flynn some scritches from her. oxoxox
I've just Realized we live not that far from you on the way to Tavistock,A small world isn't it?Hope you're doing OK and Flynn is OK too,Happy Easter,xx Speedy and mum

ReplyDeleteI'm so very sorry to hear about Eric. Such a dear boy. It's so hard to say goodbye to our furry family members. Lots of love to you all, especially to Flynn, who must be so lost.
ReplyDeleteJust dropping in to say we are still thinking of you, and hoping Flynn is doing okay. There were amazing northern lights that Äiti saw on Friday evening. There were so, so many cat tails waving.
ReplyDeleteHard to come to terms that Eric is gone. Missing the dear boy +++. Love and purrs to you and Flynn who must be feeling lost without his brother.

We love you all so much and are grateful for the story or how much Eric was loved by your family. It just doesn't seem possible to us that so many of our longtime and beloved friends have gone to the bridge. But I just know we will all be reunited again. Bless you, the cat daddy, and Flynn.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome. Thank you for dropping by and personally sending us a thank you message.
ReplyDeleteI read the portion about the good day. It's a bitter sweet moment.
But I am sure Eric is in a better place now.
Genghis and I have been off line for quite sometime and have been unaware of Eric passing.
ReplyDeleteWe wish to extend our heartfelt sympathy to all of you. Prayers, Hugs and lots of purrs.
We so loved Eric. We hop Flynn is managing fairly well without his brother.
