Ever since Eric left I have been slowly losing weight. No obvious cause had shown up and it was put down to me missing my brother and also to getting older.
A few months ago I started to lose weight more quickly so mum and dad took me back to the vet and I had my blood stolen. The results all looked good apart from thyroid which was in the higher end of normal. The vet advised no treatment at that stage but to keep an eye on my weight. Mum weighs me once a week. Until about 18 months ago I was around 14 pounds. I have always been much smaller than Eric.
Two weeks ago when mum weighed me I had dropped 1.2 pounds in a week and now weigh 11.2 pounds. I was taken back to the vet and had my throat shaved and more blood stolen. This time the T4 was definitely raised. Mum and dad were told of the alternatives for my treatment and decided on pills which I will be on for the rest of my life. I have now been on them for a week and we think it will probably be another week or so before there is any noticeable difference.
Mum is surprised at how good I am to take them which she is thankful for as they are slow release and can't be crushed. I don't fight against them, but I don't like to swallow them but do before too long. I go back after 3 weeks of taking them to have another blood test to see if the dosage needs adjusting. When mum did my weekly weigh I hadn't lost any more weight so that is good.
Mum has been using all the photos that don't show my weight loss and also I have a very thick coat which hides a lot, but in the photo below you can see a definite change in my shape and you can feel every vertebrae when my back is stroked.
Hopefully we will get good results with the pills so I can continue with a long and happy life.

We are all sending you our very best purrs and prayers Flynn, Mr. Puddy said it best, we all really do love you. Keep us updated pal, we know you will!
ReplyDeleteOh, we so truly hope that the pills work! We're sorry to hear that you have to go through this. We will keep you in our purrayers.
ReplyDeletePaws crossed that the pills work for you! Some of the cats who came before us were on thyroid pills for many years, and they can make a huge difference. We are purring that they do for you, too.
ReplyDeletePaws crossed that the meds work well for you, Flynn! I am purring lots for you, buddy!
ReplyDeleteI've gotten skinnier too since Ducky arrived. I blame him. So far the VET isn't super worried.
ReplyDeleteMum just flipped the calendar and who should we see there? YOU! and Eric too.
ReplyDeleteHappy Calendar Cat Day.
Flynn, it's not uncommon for older cats to suffer from hyperthyroidism. We're sorry you do, but glad your mum and vet caught it in time and now have you on medication that will help you. We hope you get a good report when you go to the vet again in a few weeks.
ReplyDeletePaws crossed for you Flynn! Our Monty and Tuomo had thyroid problems.Monty had BOTH his thyroids out removed in Bristol ( an op they do not like to do here in FInland ) and Tuomo was on pills. Both worked really well. We know a lot about tricky T4's and the fact you can eat and eat and eat and not put on weight, When Tuomo went on the pills his weight went up and his coat condition got very much better. He also got less restless, and did less singing! Keep us posted on progress - we really hope all goes well dude. Love to the Mom and Dad too as we know they will be anxious.
ReplyDeleteOh Flynn, we love you too and will be purring for the pills to work for you and hope that all will be well with your health.
ReplyDeleteFlynn, we are revving up our purrs for you. We pray the pills help!
ReplyDeleteMeWowZa! We are glad the vet found a reason for your weight loss, and yes, hyperthyroidism is quite common in kitties as they grow older, and we hope you continue to be a good ManCat about taking your pills, too!
ReplyDeleteWe are very glad you have stopped losing weight. And that you are easy to pill. But every once in awhile, give her a surprise and refuse, okay?
ReplyDeleteThose pills for hyperthyroidism can work wonders, Flynn. We are glad you've been diagnosed, and that there is a treatment. And that you are a good pill-taker!
ReplyDeleteHugs to you, Mum and Dad!
Our Angel Prancer Pie had very good luck with the pills, too.
ReplyDeleteWe'll be purring for you, sweet boy!
XOXO
It sounds as though the pills are working for your Flynn as your mum saw you hadn't lost more weight. We will purr for the results of your next test to show they are working for you.
ReplyDeleteTake care.
Luv Hannah and Lucy xx xx
Oh Lordy, I could see where this post was going. Being hyperthyroid is definitely no fun for the cat and scary for you. Our beloved tortie girl Cat was hyperthyroid for about 7yrs and could magic away weight in a heartbeat. I still remember how my heart used to sink when I lifted her up and she seemed to have suddenly 'deflated'....!
ReplyDeleteShe was on tablets which I had to get from a human pharmacy and end up answering to 'Cat RedSetter'! Midway through she had a partial thyroidectomy as she was becoming uncontrolled and this worked well to keep her stable. Although it was sometimes tricky balancing food, drugs, weight she lived till 16.5yo with that and a number of other conditions so it is do-able. If I can help you in any way or just give moral support mail me anytime.
Flynn we are truly "brothers" now since we're going through this adjustment together! We're both taking our pills and both doing better so our Moms will maybe not worry so much about us...a little slimming down just makes us FASTER when we chase mice right? Hang in there my friend...we'll get through this together!!!
ReplyDeleteHugs, Sammy
I pray your meds will work well for you. I was wondering if they checked a poop sample to be sure you don't have worms as well being that you are outside and probably catching mice, etc. Sorry to be so personal.
ReplyDeleteAngel Fin took those too and they really helped her feel better. Big purrs they help you too buddy!
ReplyDeleteMy goodness, Flynn. We hope your pills put some pounds back on! We like chubby kitties around here ;-)
ReplyDeleteFlynn that is why our Mom was concerned about Mr Jinx who has lost weight although his thyroid levels were in the normal range. So we ruled our Hyper-T for the reason for his weight loss. We take him back next week for an official check and go from there. Our Mom has the same worry your Mom does. But we are glad you got your diagnosis and that medication will help. (hugs)
ReplyDeletedood....eye can send ewe three pounds & 7 ounces; ore eye can send ewe 87 pies, ore eye can send de blessings oh St Francis, ore eye can due all oh de above; how cautioz iz customz bout cat fat...may bee eye can hide it ina pillow !! ♥♥♥♥♥
ReplyDeleteThis isn't good, Flynn. Your medicine has to work; we don't want you going anywhere. If you decide at some point that you don't like pills, your mum and dad should ask about ointment that can be rubbed in the ears. My Tungsten takes that well. Keep us apprised on how things go.
ReplyDeleteI am crossing paws that those pills help and you gain some weight back.
ReplyDeleteHeadbumpies and purrs,
QUINN
and Angel brandi sends her love to you.
Flynn I am hoping that the meds help and I am glad that they seem to be! I was sooo happy when I saw that Sammy had commented, I was going to suggest that you discuss this with Sammy! He is about your age too, (I think) I am so happy you are ginger brothers from another muddah!!

We expect to be following your antics for many years to come. Sending purrs and prayers for a rapid improvement. XO, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo
ReplyDeleteWishing you the best with those pills, Flynn. What a good boy you are for your mum when it comes to taking them.
ReplyDeletePrecious Flynn it will be alright. Angel Admiral had that as well and she did great on her meds. You will too. I was looking at you and Eric in your flower pots on our calendar. I love that. Made me smile. Love you Flynn. Very much. This is Katie Isabella.
ReplyDeleteFlynn we are all purring for you, we have paws crossed that the pills will do the trick. Mommy has to pill THREE of us daily...she's become quite an expert, MOL.
ReplyDeleteMiss Pea is busy baking you some tuna crumpets to fatten up on.

ReplyDeleteMarty and Mom
hang in there buddy and keep taking those pills!
ReplyDeletewe love you!
Flynn, you're a trooper!! I wouldn't let anyone except the vet pill me!! It was so lovely to see you and Eric on the CB calendar! xx
ReplyDeleteWe purr that those pills will do the trick Flynn. Our Rumpy takes pills when his Asthma flares up. Dad gets a ham slice and cuts it into strips. He then puts a small slice that goes with the grain of the meat and slips the pill in. Rumpy 9 times out of 10 eats the whole thing and loves it. We do too as we all get some along with the Bump but without pills. If the pills are small that is another way too get them and fun too.
ReplyDeletePurrs my dear pal
Timmy Dad and Family
My adorable friend Flynn!!!
ReplyDeleteI hope you stay better soon and quickly!
I love you pal!
Oh Flynnie darling! You must let us know the very moment you're not feeling well. We need to get our purrs and prayers going strait away!
ReplyDeleteWe love you so much and we want to be part of your life good and not so
good alike.
Glad to hear the pills have halted the weight loss! Once your thyroid levels are in better control you'll fill out a bit.
Many of our angel family were on the pills and didn't mind them much. Mum always made sure she was calm when she was doing the pilling and that we were kept calm before she made her attempt.
All of our love and prayers for you, sweetheart.
Purrs and healing thoughts for precious Flynn. Hope you get your weight back soon buddy
ReplyDeleteSixten the cat who lived here before me had problem with his thyroid levels when he got older too.
ReplyDeleteHe ate pills for years and years and it worked very well :)
