UPDATE:
We have just got home and have been given hope for Flynn. The vet thinks it is a severe reaction to the thyroid tablets and he is to come off his thyroid meds for a week. He is having Zantac injected every 12 hours to try and stop the diarrhoea which has been ongoing for 3 months now despite various treatments. Also he hasn't eaten for 2 days, and very little for 2 days before that. The Mirtazapine no longer works to encourage the appetite. He MUST start eating by tomorrow morning as he is running an increased risk of getting fatty liver disease. The Zantac may make him feel more like eating. If this works he will be tried on a different thyroid pill at a later date.
He appears to be in discomfort rather than pain and looks for his food but then walks away. At this moment he has 3 different flavours of wet food down, cooked fish and kibble and nothing encourages him to eat it.
Please keep our boy in your thoughts.
Flynn is going to the vet this morning. He is very ill. Please purr and pray for him that we can bring him home again.

Please try a tiny bit of crushed garlic on top of the food. Desperate times, I know. Also attempt to smear a dab of wet food gently inside his upper lip. In his late teen, my dear old tom Gus would stop eating until I got his mouth wet again.

ReplyDeletePoor Flynn, we went through this with Setzer and it really helped giving him clear Pedialyte, (it has no artificial sugars) our vet was surprised. Prayers for your boy. I am a vet tech and when we have cats with reactions to the Methimazole tablets which is common we switch them to a transdermal which is a gel you wipe in the ear. It works really well and you don't see the reactions you do with the pills. I lost my Patches to thyroid meds! I guess if they work, they are great, she was allergic to them. I blame the vets, she went to 2 different ones. I was giving it to her via her ears :(it was a gel type) and her ears broke out and then her body started attacking itself. It was so horrible. We are sending tons of purrs to you.

PS. Flynn, after I had my knee surgery, I was on this anti-inflammatory medicine called Metacam, for pain. It gave me the munchies. Perhaps your mum could ask your doctor if it would be safe for you to have a little of that? purrs
Sending every purr + prayer I have to Flynn. Please get better. Have you tried syring feeding him with AD food mixed w/ water or meat baby food? It really helps sometimes. One of our cats had a bad reaction to that thyroid med. He lost weight had scabby skin and didn't feel good. We had to stop the pills. We got him the radiation treatment, it was worth every penny, he gained his weight back and his hair filled in. He is back to his old self. Maybe it would help Flynn. We will be thinking of him, please get well Flynn. Maybe also try Pepcid AC reg strength 1/4 of pill once a day for his upset tummy.

ReplyDeleteCan you get a pill called cyproheptadine called periactin in the US? It is used as an appetite stimulant in cats and for some works better than mirtazapine. I believe Jasper was on it and the Poupounette Gang was able to get it for him. Possibly
Carol may have some left? My cats respond to it better. We love Flynn like he was our own and will keep him in our prayers.

Hi Flynn <3 <3 <3 Momma runs a forum called Raw feeding for IBD cats, and she has a bit of experience with this.... I hope this helps a little..... First, ask your VET for Cyproheptadine - it is a better appetite stimulant than Mirtazapine....
ReplyDeleteSecond - Ask your momma to feed you baby food - Beech Nut Stage one, Meet and Broth - NOT GERBER - Beech nut can be found on walmart, and on many stores, like Whole foods - it will have only meat and broth. The very best syringes in momma's opinion are these: Four Paws Easy Feed Syringe Feeder 2pk
Momma buys them on Amazon, but there are some places that sell them too.
Now - to stop that Diarrhea Immediately - Give him Saccharomyces Boulardii. It's a probiotic, but it's a very special one. You can get it a whole foods, or in another natural store, such as sprouts - here it is Jarrow Sacharomyces Boulardii
Normally, you would give 1/2 capsule in the morning and 1/2 capsule at night, but since he is so bad, you might want to try what we call the emergency protocol.
here it is:
For emergency “stop diarrhea” use, it is recommended to purchase size 3 empty capsules. Fill 10 or so of
these, and administer them to your cat every 2 hours. This usually stops diarrhea within 24 hours. This
can be continued into a second day if necessary.
When the diarrhea has resolved, begin use of S. boulardii at the therapeutic dose level (2.5 billion CFU
twice daily) and continue for one week; then adjust dose to the maintenance level (half that), or use the
Nexabiotic 21-strain probiotic (page 2) for maintenance. If stools soften, resume use of S. boulardii at the
therapeutic dose for up to one month.
Please, please stop the kibble - syringe feed him a bland bland diet to stop this diarrhea, give him S boulardii, and change him to cyproheptadine..... IMHO it's a great shot for him to get better.
