He told me of all the normal risks of surgery and anaesthetic. Then he dropped his bombshell!
He told me that I was at very high risk in three different areas. Because of scar tissue from the original cancer surgery in 2011 he would most likely have to continue with open surgery. The metastatic cancer has also put me at a very high risk. I assume he meant by that it could cause it to spread rapidly which was the reason they didn't want to operate when I originally started getting the gallstone attacks. Also there was a high risk of tearing my liver or damaging other organs like the pancreas.
He also said that if I did get Covid it would be very dangerous for me.
My operation wasn't due for another hour so he told me to think carefully before I decided. If I wanted to go ahead he would send the anaesthetist to see me, and if they gave the all clear for that he would go ahead.
He said if I decided all the risks were to great to just let the nurse know. I was under no pressure to go ahead.
I rang Ivor and we agreed it was too risky. One high risk wouldn't have been so bad, but three plus knowing Covid would affect me very badly was just too much to chance.
I will have lived with metastatic cancer for almost 4 years and I don't want to throw that away for one rotten gall bladder!
I just wish he could have read my medical history earlier so I hadn't been building myself up for the operation which I was already very nervous about.
To say I feel shell shocked is an understatement!

This flashback comes from January 2008 and is called,
"Watcha Doing?"
The random photo this week has been chosen by Little Binky. We are usually away on a cruise around that date for our anniversary, so I have got one from the date nearest to then.
For Little Binky. |
I am also joining Sandee at Comedy Plus for the Feline Friday blog hop.
Those boys were so darn special and Binky sure chose a good one. I'm sorry you got such a rotten deal on your surgery. You're right, the physician should have looked at it much, much sooner. But yes, it sounded too risky and you made a good decision. Hugs and love from all of us.
ReplyDeleteFlynn sure was funny!! Little Binky will be giggling for sure!
ReplyDeleteWhat a big bummer to get all psyched up like that and then to be told info you should have been informed about much earlier. Sheesh. Once I was supposed to have a surgery, got all prepped, but was still at home, and I got a call from the doc to tell me she could not do that surgery cause of the meds I would need to use afterwards...they would likely aggravate my cancer back into active status...well, didn't they know that before hand?? Sometimes, Grrr...then I had to quickly get on the phone to tell my pastor to stay home, MOL, MOL!
That's a cute little story with Eric and Flynn...yup, laser eyes...a great talent to have at Halloween!
UGH! I can't believe the doctors pulled that on you at the last minute. I think you made the right decision, considering your history.
ReplyDeletewe ll picked photo by Binky... it is super great! we think your decision was a good one and we send lots of potp and positive thoughts to you...
ReplyDeleteππΎπ½ππΎπ½
ReplyDeleteI think if I was in your position I had done the same it sounds far too risky but it is strange that he didn't warn you beforehand would had saved all the worry, mt best wishes to you :-)
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the flashback the I'm practicing my laser eyes made me giggle.
I always like the art versions too
Aww! @ Little Binky :-)
Have a safetastic weekend :-)
Oh, geez! It's pretty ridiculous that no one noticed the risks before! We hope you don't have gallbladder pain attacks. It's funny that picture was chosen by Binky - the look on Flynn's face looks just for her!
ReplyDeleteJackie, am so sorry that you (and Ivor, too) had to go through that, it shouldn't have happened that way. But there was a little angel (or two) on your shoulder(s) that moved you towards the good choice. The days ahead will be safer and better for you because you walked away, may God be watching over you. (PS Binky chose our fave photo!) Hugs to you, dear friend. Love, A
ReplyDeleteSuch a shame that your surgeon didn't thoroughly review your file BEFORE you got so close to having the surgery. I know it DID feel like the rug was pulled out from under you. I am sure you made the right decision and feel the surgeon hoped that would be your decision too. We will just hope and pray that your gall bladder BEHAVES...!! I'm sure the Angels were on your shoulder all the way and always will guide you where you need to go...........
ReplyDeleteLove and Hugs, Pam (and Teddy too)
Jackie I am so sorry you had to deal with this decision just as you were there to have surgery. Goodness me I appreciate that he was honest with you but gosh I wish the news had been delivered at home long before all this wait. Sending you hugs and wishes that the gall bladder somehow dries up on its own and the pain stops.
ReplyDeleteAs always I love these flashbacks of the Angels Eric and Flynn. My mind's eye pictures E&F and Diva Madi
having a grand time OTRB with all their furry friends
Hugs Cecilia
What a fun flashback. We always love seeing Eric and Flynn interact.
ReplyDeleteWe're sorry about your surgery...or no surgery as the case may be. It's too bad you got all the way to that point before someone discussing risks to you. We think you probably did the right thing but are sad that you have to go through all of this. Sending you many purrs .
We're surprised the surgeon didn't let you know all of that prior to arriving at the hospital. It would have saved you a lot of worry. We think you made the right decision.
ReplyDeleteGreat flashback! We love the photo Binky picked too!!!
Thanks for the puzzle.
The Florida Furkids
How awful for the doctor to spring that on you right before the surgery! I too think you made the right decision. Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.
ReplyDeleteSorry you have to suffer with your gallbladder, but it does sound too risky- would have been nice of them to tell you all this before you even prepped for it.
ReplyDeleteCute flashback photos. Thank you for the puzzle. XO
I would have backed out of that surgery too. I'm so sorry this is happening to you. Big healing hugs.
ReplyDeleteLove all the flashback shots. Cats are so special and they remain in our hearts forever.
Thank you for joining the Feline Friday Blog Hop.
Have a purrfect Feline Friday and weekend. ♥
Oh good gad!
ReplyDeleteHere's hoping you and your docs come up with a plan of action to make those gallbladder attacks less frequent and milder, since you can't take the sucker OUT!
The picture for Little Binky is just too adorbs, and thanks for the puzzle...I'll play later!
Take care.
Jackie, I think you dodged a bullet. Astrological it was a poor time for surgery. Hugs! Flashbacks always make my day xoxo
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh- what a stressful time- I thinnk you made the right decision - just sorry you had to go through that. Take care and you are in our prayers.
ReplyDeleteWe just love this week's random photo!
ReplyDeleteWe agree that the surgeon was totally out of order. He should have said all that to you much earlier.

Wow, that's too bad he didn't tell you that before going in! It would've saved a lot of anxiety, I'm sure.
ReplyDeleteFirstly we loved all the photos and your artwork is superb!
ReplyDeleteBut my goodness what an ordeal to put you through. I am so sorry you had to go through it that way and I understand as I had something similar but happen that was around an oral surgery on my tongue so I understand about being given a choice at the very last moment. Prayers for you and Ivor.
That sure was a lot to spring on you so close to surgery time. We agree you made the right decision. Love seeing the boys having a good conversation:)
ReplyDeleteWoos - Lightning, Misty, and Timber
Goodness that really was a lot to bring up right as you were ready to go. Being an RN here I have to say poo. He should have gone over this way ahead of time. That said I do hope that cholelithiasis calms down and stops with the bother. Thanks as always for the great photos of the boys and we know Binky will love that special one. Prayers and purrs for you both as always
ReplyDeleteDad Pete, Timmy and Family
Adorable photos, especially the last! I definitely think you made the right decision.
ReplyDeleteWe are sending you prayers and would agree with your decision if it was us. Things may work out for the best any way.
ReplyDeleteIf you can manage to feel well, then by all means put off surgery. We also are sending lots of purrs and positive energy to you!
ReplyDeletePurrs, Julie and "mum" Nancy
How stressful for you. The doc shouldn't have let you know at the last minute.
ReplyDeleteLove the art as always.
Purrs xx
The flashback photos are, as always, a joy, but your health woes- my heavens! We're so sorry to hear what you're going through.
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful boys, I love that pic you have for Binky, it is just darling!
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear that you had to go through all that just to cancel the surgery. - Enjoyed seeing your flash back shots and Caturday art. Happy Halloween.
ReplyDeleteWell, yeah, the doctor should have had that conversation with you before that moment, a couple of days before. It takes a bit of effort to get into the right frame of mind for surgery and you were no doubt thrown for a loop. I don't know what the condition of your gall bladder does to you, but if you made the choice to leave it, it can't be as bad as the risks. But rotten timing on the doctor's part...
ReplyDeleteOMC Angel Flynn, that was one pose, man...MOL..We're purraying for you, JackieππΌπ π»Extra Spooky Pawkisses for a Happy Halloweenπ»πΎπ½π
ReplyDeleteWell, the good thing is that the surgeon did inform you so you could make the best decision for you.
ReplyDeletePraying you have no more gall bladder attacks!
Mum and I also send purrs to you.
ReplyDeleteAt this time, surgery may not be the best option.
We hope that the doctors can help you feel well for a while until there is a safer time or option.
BIG PURRS and Happy Halloween,
Purrs,
Julie
We always love seeing Angels Eric and Flynn and their conversations. Jackie, you and Ivor made the right decision. We hope there will be a safer option in the not so distant future. Love and hugs to you.
ReplyDeleteWhoa! Binka caught Flynn in a compromising position. We're so sorry to read your medical news. I know you hate to have to suffer those attacks but it is a lot of risk to think about. We hope another safer option comes along. You made the right decision.
ReplyDeleteOMC! We are sure you made the right decision but to have that sprung on you at the last minute...
ReplyDeleteWe hope something can be done to keep the attacks at bay since surgery doesn't seem to be an option in the foreseeable future.
Lovely pics of the boys, as usual. Little Binky's choice is so funny (mol).
As we read your pre-op situation, we were thinking why this hadn't been brought up before you were right up against the procedure! Anyway, I'm glad the doc did talk to you and I think you made the right choice. We love you and don't want you under the knife, if we can help it!! Is there anything holistic to east gall bladder discomfort? Purrs - Tom, Bridget & Penny xoxoxo
ReplyDeleteWe agree with Fr. Tom--it's very unfortunate that this was a last-minute development. On the other paw, we're glad you had the chance to opt out! Mom sympathizes with you on the attacks and hopes they are not too frequent or severe. (She wishes she had some magic words to make the issue go away altogether.)
ReplyDeleteLove the photos of the boys!
Laser eyes! That's what I kind of missed about cats. It's been awhile since I lived with cats. Glad you made a medical decision you are happy about. Positive vibes your way.
ReplyDeleteHazel
so sorry to hear that you had to go through such stress only to cancel the operation! Hope all is ok! Frodo sends you an extra big hug!
ReplyDeleteMaybe once Covid is over you can rethink the op, but for now it seems you made the right choice. I really am surprised they did not mention before though!
ReplyDeleteThat is such a cool set of laser eyes. I'm not very good at those, mainly because I nap so much mol.
Bink's picture selection was a real charmer, and makes us both smile.
